Necessity of Isolation & Lighting Transformer

Output of electric equipments depends upon the quality of power as well as neutral connectivity of system. If the electric power having the impurity and weak neutral connectivity than electric equipments will be not able to work with its maximum efficiency and may lead to faults . In addition of above adequate isolation between a power source and a user of electronic equipment ensures the safety of that equipment. Isolation transformers have represented a traditional solution for providing high isolation in electronic circuitry. Even with the increased use of efficient, switched-mode power supplies (SMPS), isolation transformers can improve the overall isolation of an electronic design without severe penalties in added size, weight, and cost.

For serving the purpose there are solutions available in the form of isolation & lighting transformers. It helps us in many ways some are as below:
*    Generation of Neutral connectivity.
*    Strengthen the neutral connectivity
*    Works as a filter device for an impure power that’s why it is most reliable in the Data centers.
*    Very effective for drives & UPS.

In addition of above high power factor is generally desirable in a transmission system to reduce transmission losses and improve voltage regulation at the load. It is often desirable to adjust the power factor of a system to near 1.0. When reactive elements supply or absorb reactive power near the load, the apparent power is reduced. Power factor correction may be applied by an electrical power transmission utility to improve the stability and efficiency of the transmission network. Individual electrical customers who are charged by their utility for low power factor may install correction equipment to reduce those costs. Correction equipments which are using for same is capacitor banks but due to high currents these capacitor got heated and damaged, to improve the life for theses capacitor banks we can use isolation and lighting transformers.

Further Harmonic currents generated by non-linear loads can cause problem in the power systems and particularly the distribution transformers as they are weak to overheating and premature failure. Normally designers recommend an oversized transformer to protect transformer from overheating. Isolation & lighting transformers are specifically designed to accommodate harmonic currents. These are preferred because they have additional thermal capacity of known limits, design features that minimize harmonic current losses, and neutral and terminal connections sized at 200% of normal. These transformers allow operation up to nameplate capacity without derating. Lighting & Isolation transformers offer an effective means of meeting the requirements of domestic and international safety standards for electronic equipment.

An isolation & lighting transformer is a transformer, often with symmetrical windings having the ratio of 1:1, which is used to decouple two circuits. These transformers allow an AC signal taken from one device and fed into another without electrically connecting the two circuits. Isolation transformers block transmission of DC signals from one circuit to the other, but allow AC signals to pass. These transformers with electrostatic shields are used for power supplies for sensitive equipment such as computers or laboratory instruments.
Since the neutral wire of an outlet is directly connected to ground, grounded objects near the device may be at a hazardous potential difference with respect to that device. By using an isolation transformer, the bonding is eliminated, and the shock hazard is entirely contained within the device.
So we can conclude that isolation & lighting transformer is the best device to save our expensive equipments from overheating, shock hazardous & harmonics in addition of following advantages:

Reduces upstream harmonic currents
• Eliminates transformer overheating and high operating temperatures
• Eliminates primary winding circulating current
• Saves energy by reducing harmonic losses
• Maintains high energy efficiency even under severe non-loading conditions
• Suitable for harmonics loads without increasing in-rush current
• Improves power factor.
• Protection against Surges.
